Luminar Photo Camp Itinerary

Day 1 - 7th Feb - Arrival in Iceland

You’ll arrive at Keflavík International Airport, where you’ll take a transfer into the heart of Reykjavík. The journey will take approximately an hour, during which you’ll catch your first glimpse of the otherworldly landscape marked by barren lava fields along the way. Once you arrive in Reykjavík, you’ll check in to your hotel. There will be some time to relax and explore the city at your leisure until around 6-7 pm.

Day 2 - 8th Feb - The South Coast’s Waterfalls & Black Sand Beaches

On day two, you’ll enjoy the journey along Iceland’s extraordinary South Coast. Our first stop will be at the splendid Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Fed by glacial meltwater from the famed Eyjafjallajökull volcano (the same one which stopped air traffic when it burst into life, erupting in 2010), this waterfall cascades from a height of 60 meters into the river below. What makes it so special is a pathway that leads behind the waterfall into a cavern where, from within, you’ll be able to capture a unique angle of the water.

Day 3 - 9th Feb - Vatnajokull National Park & Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

We’ll continue the journey towards Vatnajökull National Park, where glaciers reign supreme. One of the most popular attractions that we will visit is the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. This is where large icebergs that have calved from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier float in tidal waters, before making their way out through a narrow waterway towards the ocean. If we’re lucky, we'll have the chance to capture some of the spectacular wildlife in the area, including seals swimming about in the icy waters as they hunt for fish.

Day 4 - 10th Feb - Sunrise at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon & Ice CavePhotography

On this day, we’ll rise early for a sunrise shoot at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and the Diamond Beach. The highlight of the day will be a visit to an ice cave deep within the Vatnajökull National Park. Once there, you’ll have a short hike up on the glacier before you descend beneath Europe’s largest ice cap, the Vatnajökull glacier. Later in the day, you’ll return to your hotel within the Jökulsárlón area for dinner and photography masterclasses. Hopefully, there will be a chance to photograph the Northern Lights tonight.

Day 5 - 11th Feb - Back to Reykjavik

We’ll begin day five bright and early with another sunrise session at the Diamond Beach. Thereafter, we’ll begin the long journey back to Reykjavík. We'll stop by at the fishing village of Vík as well as the magical Dyrhólaey promontory, where you'll be treated to staggering views over Iceland’s south coast. We’ll reach Reykjavík in the evening, just in time for dinner. After dinner, we’ll have our final photography masterclass presented by the Skylum team and our Iceland Photo Tours guides. You’ll then retire for the night to your hotel in Reykjavík.

Day 6 - 12th Feb - Reykjavik Experience

On our sixth day, we’ll have breakfast before exploring the quaint and charming sights of Reykjavík city on a walking tour. We’ll visit such attractions as the Sun Voyager sculpture by the sea, the fascinating Hallgrímskirkja church in the center of town, the Harpa concert hall, Tjörnincity pond surrounded by colorful houses and the Reykjavík old harbor. In the evening, we’ll head out for a delicious farewell dinner to celebrate an incredible photography camp, and then have fun at one last party.

Day 7 - 13th Feb - Departure from Iceland

This will be the final day of our Skylum and Iceland Photo Tours Camp in Iceland. No doubt you'll have countless images of the Northern Lights and ice caves saved to your memory cards, as well as a wonderful range of new photography skills under your belt to practice into the future. When it is time, you will take a transfer back to Keflavík International Airport, where you’ll be able to catch your flight home or onwards to your next destination.

FAQ

Do I need to be an expert photographer to join the Camp?

The primary purpose of the camp is to learn and get experience, so you don’t need to be concerned about your level. We welcome ALL photographers, no matter how professional. Every day we will travel, work with various scenarios, and explore the true beauty of mother nature through our cameras. If you love taking photos and are passionate about photo art, this Camp will bring you a lot of joy and dramatically boost your skills.

Will I be able to see the Northern lights?

We will hunt the Aurora every night, as it’s a sight to see! The Northern Lights can be seen in Iceland from late August until the beginning of April if the sky is clear and Aurora activity is forecasted, so the chances are high.

It’s February! Won’t it be too cold?

We get that question a lot, but don’t worry — winters in Iceland are not as cold as you may think. The average low is approximately -2 degrees Celsius (28.4 Fahrenheit), whereas the average high is about 3 degrees Celsius (37.4 Fahrenheit). You’ll find the indoors to be quite toasty and warm.

What should I pack, and what gear should I bring with me?

We will send you a complete clothing and camera equipment list in our welcome kit after you book your spot. Our general recommendation for dressing in Iceland is to wear layers and to stay away from heavy cotton clothing. Lighter alternatives like Merino wool are warm, wrinkle-free, and will serve you well.

How do I book my spot at the Camp?

If you’re located in the US, we will send you a secure payment link via your email for you to make the payment. You can also make a bank wire transfer if you prefer. If you’re located outside the USA, we will contact you via email with the invoice.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Sure, we have a cancellation and refund policy.

If you cancel before the start of the workshop and the Camp is otherwise filled, we’ll refund the full amount you paid, minus a $300 service charge.

If you cancel and the Camp does not fill, then you will be refunded according to the following schedule:

  • Cancellation until November 30, 2019: full refund minus $300 service fee.

  • Cancellation after November 30, 2019 before January 7, 2020: 50% refund plus $300 cancellation fee.

  • Cancellation after January 7. 2020: no refunds will be given.

Refunds will be paid through the same method in which the original payment was made. We strongly recommend that you obtain trip cancellation and travel insurance after booking your trip. If you must cut your trip short for any reason once it has already commenced, you will not receive any refund.
