Frequently Asked Questions

  • I get an 'OpenGL 3.3' version error.

Luminar 3 requires a graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.3. If you’re using a laptop, make sure you run Luminar on a discrete card. Refer to the laptop’s manufacturer for detailed instructions. If your card supports OpenGL 3.3, try fully reinstalling drivers for all graphics cards on your computer. Make sure to download drivers from the card manufacturer’s website.

  • Can I add folders and photos from Cloud Storage?

Luminar lets you add folders from cloud storage locations that are synced to your computer.  In this case, synced means that a physical copy of the photo resides on either your internal or external hard drive.  If only a reference copy of the photo is located in the cloud storage photo, Luminar will not be able to create a thumbnail or be able to edit the image.

Adding folders from synced cloud storage is very useful in situations where a client or family member adds images remotely to a cloud service server. Once these images are synced locally to your computer, Luminar automatically adds them to your Library.

  • Where can I download Luminar 3?

If for some reason you didn’t receive an email with the download link, you can always download the trial version here and activate it with your e-mail address and activation code.

  • I have Luminar 2018. How do I get Luminar 3?

You can download it from your Skylum account here.

Luminar 3 is free for all owners of Luminar 2018.

  • I'm getting a Database Initialization Failed error

Please send us the contents of your Luminar Catalog folder, so that we could investigate this issue. The default location of Luminar Catalog folder is C:\Users\UserName\Pictures\

You will need to zip the folder in order to send it to us. Click here if you need help with zipping the folder.

Here's how you can send us the zipped folder:

    1. Visit https://wetransfer.com/
    2. If it's your first time visiting this website, it might ask you to purchase a subscription. Simply select to proceed with the free version.
    3. Click Add your files.
    4. Select the zip file on your computer.
    5. After you see all the files you need to send appear in the list, click the icon to the left of the Transfer button (the icon looks like a circle with three dots in it).
    6. In Send As select Link.
    7. Click Transfer.
    8. After the file has finished uploading, click Copy Link and paste it into the reply to this email.

In order to get Luminar up and running while we fix everything, follow these steps:

    1. Reboot your computer.
    2. Locate your Luminar Catalog folder. The default location is C:\Users\UserName\Pictures\. If you specified a custom location for Luminar Catalog folder, search your custom location.
    3. Remove the Luminar Catalog folder.
    4. Start Luminar. This time it should open without errors.
    5. When adding an image folder to your Luminar catalog, specify another folder with photos (not the one you pointed Luminar to before encountering the error).

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • I ran Luminar for the first time and there's no Next button in the welcome screen (Windows)
    1. Close Luminar.
    2. Right-click any empty space on your desktop > Display settings.
    3. In the window that opens, set the Change the size of text, apps, and other items dropdown to 100%.
    4. Start Luminar 3 and finish the setup wizard. You can safely change the display scaling back to its initial value after this.
  • Installation freezes at 100% on my Mac

Try installing Luminar from a user account on your Mac that has administrator privileges. The installation should work normally if your user account has all the necessary permissions. If this doesn't help, contact the support team.

  • I'm getting an 'Unexpected error has occurred' when I'm trying to install Luminar 3

Our servers are under heavy load right now, so the installer may have trouble successfully connecting. Try the following:

    1. Reboot your computer.
    2. Start the Luminar installer.
    3. When the installer asks you to specify the installation location, note the value shown in Space Required string. If it shows 0, close the installer and start it again later. If Space Required is not zero, proceed with the installation. You may need to close and start the installer a few times before Space Required displays a correct value (it must not be 0).
