Frequently Asked Questions

  • I get an 'OpenGL 3.3' version error.

Luminar 3 requires a graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.3. If you’re using a laptop, make sure you run Luminar on a discrete card. Refer to the laptop’s manufacturer for detailed instructions. If your card supports OpenGL 3.3, try fully reinstalling drivers for all graphics cards on your computer. Make sure to download drivers from the card manufacturer’s website.

  • Can I add folders and photos from Cloud Storage?

Luminar lets you add folders from cloud storage locations that are synced to your computer.  In this case, synced means that a physical copy of the photo resides on either your internal or external hard drive.  If only a reference copy of the photo is located in the cloud storage photo, Luminar will not be able to create a thumbnail or be able to edit the image.

Adding folders from synced cloud storage is very useful in situations where a client or family member adds images remotely to a cloud service server. Once these images are synced locally to your computer, Luminar automatically adds them to your Library.

  • I have Luminar 2018. How do I get Luminar 3?

You can download it from your Skylum account here.

  • I'm getting a Database Initialization Failed error

This issue has been fixed in Luminar 3.0.1. If your copy didn't update automatically, uninstall Luminar from your computer and download the latest copy from here:

    https://luminar3.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/win/Luminar3_Installer.exe

Try the following steps to get Luminar up and running:

    1. Make sure Luminar is closed.
    2. Locate your Luminar Catalog folder. The default location is C:\Users\%username%\Pictures\. If you specified a custom location for your catalog, search your custom location.
    3. Remove the Luminar Catalog folder. Start Luminar.
    4. When Luminar prompts you to create a new catalog instead of the one you've removed, change the default location of the catalog, i.e. place it somewhere other than your Pictures folder. If you have an apostrophe in the path to your catalog, place the catalog somewhere where there's no apostrophe in the path.

If the steps above didn't help, please send us the contents of your Luminar Catalog folder, so that we could investigate this issue.

The default location of Luminar Catalog folder is C:\Users\%username%\Pictures\. If you specified a custom location for your catalog, search your custom location. Zip the contents of the folder before sending it to us: this way it will take up less space and will upload more quickly.

Click here for more information on creating zip files on Windows.

Here's how you can send us the zip file with your catalog:

    1. Visit https://wetransfer.com/
    2. If it's your first time visiting this website, it might ask you to purchase a subscription. Simply select to proceed with the free version.
    3. Click Add your files.
    4. Select the file(s) on your computer.
    5. After you see all the files you need to send appear in the list, click the icon to the left of the Transfer button (the icon looks like a circle with three dots in it).
    6. In Send As select Link.
    7. Click Transfer.
    8. After the files have finished uploading, click Copy Link and paste it into the text of your email. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to find the email form: https://skylum.com/support
  • I ran Luminar for the first time and there's no Next button in the welcome screen (Windows)

    On Windows 8 / 10:

    1. Close Luminar.
    2. Right-click any empty space on your desktop > Display settings.
    3. In the window that opens, set the Change the size of text, apps, and other items dropdown to 100%.
    4. Start Luminar 3 and finish the setup wizard. You can safely change the display scaling back to its initial value after this.

    On Windows 7:

    1. Close Luminar.
    2. Click the Start button.
    3. Type Display in the Search box.
    4. Click Display in the Control Panel section of the results.
    5. In a window that opens, set the scaling value to 100% and check if you can see all the controls in Luminar.
  • Installation freezes at 100% on my Mac

Try installing Luminar from a user account on your Mac that has administrator privileges. The installation should work normally if your user account has all the necessary permissions. If this doesn't help, contact the support team.

  • I'm getting an 'Unexpected error has occurred' when I'm trying to install Luminar 3

Looks like the installer is unable to connect to our servers. Try the following:

    1. Reboot your computer.
    2. Ensure that your antivirus/firewall/network settings allow the Luminar installer to connect to the Internet.
    3. Start the Luminar installer.
    4. When the installer asks you to specify the installation location, note the value shown in Space Required string. If it shows 0 or there's a spinning circle, close the installer and start it again later. If Space Required shows a value, proceed with the installation. You may need to close and start the installer a few times before Space Required displays a correct value (it must not be 0 and show a value).

If the solution above doesn't work, try this installer:
