One of the most magical and unique places to photograph on the planet is the Portuguese island of Madeira. Located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 320 miles (5200 km) off the coast of Morocco, it’s known for its distinct volcanic terrain, dramatic coastlines and old-growth forests.

“Cloud cover persists on Madeira for more than 200 days a year in some high altitude areas, giving the island its mysterious character,” writes travel photographer Lukas Richter in a recent Instagram post. “Since vegetation occupies two thirds of the island’s surface, you can always access surprising landscapes with cinematographic outlines.”

1. Queimadas Forest Park

The Queimadas Forest Park is an excellent place to observe the biological richness of the laurel forest, which UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 Furthermore, in the area, you will find the Queimadas Refuge, which maintains the original characteristics of Santana’s old houses. 

2. Fanal Laurisilva Forest

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its enigmatic and distinctive scenery, characterized by trees that have stood for up to 500 years. 

3. Ponta do Rosto Viewpoint

Located in the São Lourenço Peninsula, the Ponta do Rosto viewpoint offers a landscape dominated by steep coastal cliffs (very relevant from a geomorphological point of view). From there, you can see both the north and south coasts of the island of Madeira.
